What is Digital Mobile Radio?
Digital Mobile Radio (DMR) is an open digital radio standard defined by the European Telecommunications Standards Institute (ETSI). It uses Time-Division Multiple Access (TDMA) technology, which allows two simultaneous conversations to occur on a single 12.5 kHz channel by splitting the transmission into two distinct time slots.
DMR is a very popular mode and a lot of repeaters can be found throughout the country.

- Spectrum Efficiency: By utilizing two time slots, DMR doubles the capacity of existing 12.5 kHz channels, allowing more users to communicate without interference.
- Audio Quality: DMR provides consistent, clear digital audio quality throughout the coverage area, eliminating the background noise and static common in analog FM.
- Talkgroups & Networking: DMR uses "Talkgroups" to organize traffic. Through digital networks like BrandMeister or DMR-MARC, local repeaters can be linked globally over the internet, allowing users to communicate across states or continents.
- Data Capabilities: In addition to voice, DMR supports various data features including GPS location reporting, short text messaging, and status updates.
- Configuration: DMR radios require a "Codeplug," a specific configuration file that contains channel data, talkgroup lists, and repeater settings, which must be programmed into the radio before operation. Codeplugs are complex and are usually created and edited with an off-radio application and the finished codeplug is then imported into the radio.
