SDR applications offer capabilities from general band listening and signal analysis, special-purpose such as ADS-B decoding, balloon tracking and radio design and development. The great thing about them is the huge variety that are freely available.
One of the best places to get both technical and general information about software defined radio and what hardware and software is available is the RTL-SDR Blog website.
